Job description
ABOUT THE ROLE
My client is on the lookout for a Data architect who would lead the definition of the Data Platform target architecture, principles and roadmaps in order to drive the health, reduce technical debt and champion continuous improvement of their platforms. Ensure the Platform meets current business needs and strategic direction, yet has flexibility designed in to handle changes in business strategy, evolves in line with best practice, either from a vendor or industry norms, remains in good technical health through actively minimising technical debt.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
● Advocate of the value of technology and its capability to drive value, growth and extraordinary customer experience across the business.
● Advocate and drive a culture of improvement both within the function and wider department.
● Platform owner for the data platform which supports operational systems, warehousing, analytics, BI systems.
● Represent the Technology & Change department at the Data Council, support data quality and improvement initiatives.
● Collaborate effectively with the 'data community' e.g. data modelers, analysts, BI developers, integration developers.
● Engage with Technical and Business Stakeholders (e.g. Director of Data Science, Head of BI, Data Platform Owner) to understand business strategies, and define aligned technology strategies, architectures and roadmaps to enable these.
● Engage with business & technology stakeholders to provide consultancy on solution options and ensure alignment with the business goals.
● Collaborate with other Architects to guide the definition and implementation of roadmaps and strategies relevant to the Platform or Solution.
● Working with the integration Platform Architect, architect the data flow, data integration patterns, logical and physical data models.
● Lead technical shaping in the early phases of projects (prior to commencement of development) to define the business case by providing solution options, technical costs, build sequencing and technical delivery team structure.
● Lead a virtual team of expert SME's, external vendors, designers and architects where appropriate to define fit for purpose architectures.
● Lead the process of selecting suitable solutions and vendors working closely with other architects, compliance and legal teams.
● Ensure Platform & Solution architectures are clearly communicated to relevant stakeholders
● Ensure relevant artefacts and decisions adhere to governance procedures.
● Where appropriate, oversee the build to ensure alignment to the Platform/Solution design
● Develop ways of working, tooling, templates and processes to support Platform & Solution architecture that are right sized and compatible with Lean and Agile methodologies.
● Lead and define the evaluation and selection of Data related standards, principles and methodologies relevant to the Platform(s) or Solution (s).
● Develop strategic relationships with key technology partners to understand best practice and assist in developing target architectures and roadmaps.

PROFESSIONAL CAPABILITIES

● Significant experience in a senior architecture role within a FTSE 250 organization, with direct experience in the applications of formal architecture methodologies and frameworks.
● Significant experience in delivering data oriented technology including data warehousing, BI, analytics, operational data systems, master data management (MDM)
● Significant experience designing and scaling data preferably in a cloud based environment
● Significant experience in OLTP, OLAP and unstructured data architecture using a variety of vendor technologies
● Significant experience working with key business and technical stakeholders including data scientists, BI teams, integration developers, data analysts and modelers
● Significant experience in modern approaches to dealing with Big Data e.g. data streaming, Cloud Native platforms, machine learning
● Experience in running and driving the debate in workshops and meetings with senior business stakeholders.
● Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and deployment environments.
● Experience of major business case development & change/transformation planning.
● Direct experience in implementing and defining architectures based on COTS packages.
● Direct experience in implementing and defining SOA, Microservice, and Cloud Native based architectures.
● Experience in a regulated industry, preferably Insurance.
● Track record of building strong relationships with key technology vendors and system integrators
● Direct experience of Lean, Agile, DevOps, Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) practices.
● Significant vendor management experience, leading large, geographically dispersed teams which may include outsourced or offshore development teams
● Experience of working in a matrix organisation.
