Government Seeks Science and Technology Leaders for Top Advisory Roles

By . September 27, 2024

The UK government is on the lookout for new members to join the prime minister's Council for Science and Technology (CST), its highest-level advisory body on key issues in science and technology. The recruitment drive aims to fill 8 positions on the council, which plays a vital role in advising the government on both domestic and international science and technology matters.

The CST is co-chaired by Angela McLean, the government's chief scientific adviser, and John Browne, former CEO of BP. The council provides strategic guidance directly to the prime minister and supports the UK's efforts to strengthen global science and technology partnerships by working closely with similar bodies in other countries.

The new recruits will help shape the government’s policy agenda by offering insights into emerging and future trends in science and technology. According to the job listing, the government is seeking individuals who have a comprehensive understanding of the research and innovation landscape and are capable of fostering strong connections with key stakeholders. These new members will also need to demonstrate the ability to "work effectively with and command the confidence of" the prime minister, cabinet ministers, and top-level figures within academia, business, and public services.

Applicants should have substantial experience dealing with national-level issues in fields such as science, technology, engineering, or innovation. McLean emphasised that the government is keen to accelerate innovation and boost productivity through science, research, and new technologies.

“We’re looking for passionate individuals with expertise in science, engineering, innovation, or technology,” McLean said in a message to potential applicants. “This is a unique opportunity to bring your perspective to the table and collaborate with other distinguished members to help shape policies that will lead to better outcomes for society.”

Successful candidates will initially be appointed for a three-year term, with the option to renew. The role requires a commitment of two days per month.

Established in 1993 following a government whitepaper, the CST has produced over 50 reports advising prime ministers and government officials. Its contributions have been instrumental in launching initiatives like the Alan Turing Institute, the UK genome sequencing program, and the 100,000 Genomes Project. The council also played a key role in shaping the government’s current science and technology framework.

In 2021, then-prime minister Boris Johnson set up the Office for Science and Technology to further support the CST. Originally part of the Cabinet Office, this division now operates under the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, following a restructuring by the current Labour government. The department’s mission is to transform public services and drive economic growth through advancements in science and technology.
