UK Government Calls on AI Innovators to Drive Clean Energy Revolution
The UK government has issued a bold call to action for artificial intelligence (AI) innovators to play a pivotal role in the nation's clean energy transition. This initiative aligns with the UK’s ambitious target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Through the second round of the Manchester Prize, launched by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), funding is being made available for AI-focused academics and entrepreneurs. The goal: to harness AI’s transformative potential in decarbonising the UK energy grid, enhancing energy efficiency, and securing the nation’s energy future.
This round offers £100,000 grants to ten shortlisted applicants, with the eventual winner receiving a £1 million prize to advance their innovation. Applications close on 17 January 2025, and over the next eight weeks, the government is encouraging proposals that demonstrate the impactful uses of AI in clean energy.
Potential projects could range from optimising energy output from wind and solar farms to using AI for predictive analytics in energy demand, and even advancing energy-saving technologies for homes and businesses. These innovations are seen as crucial to not only meeting the net zero goal but also in positioning the UK as a global clean energy leader.
Transformative Potential
Feryal Clark, Minister for AI, underscored the far-reaching potential of AI in addressing society’s challenges. "AI can transform our public services, make us more productive, and tackle the biggest shared challenges,” said Clark. She emphasised that the Manchester Prize aims to foster groundbreaking innovations to deliver a clean, secure energy future for the UK.
Paul Monks, Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, highlighted the climate crisis as society’s "greatest long-term challenge." He stressed the need for ambitious applications of AI to revolutionise energy systems and accelerate the UK’s decarbonisation goals.
A Platform for Innovation
Launched in 2023, the Manchester Prize is a flagship initiative to support AI-driven innovation over the next decade. Its first round, focused on energy, environment, and infrastructure, concludes in 2025, setting the stage for this new, targeted approach to clean energy solutions.
This initiative represents a unique opportunity for innovators to contribute to a sustainable energy revolution, paving the way for a cleaner, greener UK. With substantial funding and government backing, it’s a critical step toward leveraging AI to meet the demands of the climate crisis head-on.
