The role of technology in the classroom has taken time to establish itself over the decades but in the last couple of years, remote learning has spurred on developments in the education sector and taken education beyond the classroom and into homes. Digital learning has become an essential part of the education system. So, what are the main trends transforming how we teach and learn?
AI and automation can be used to undertake time-consuming tasks such as testing and grading. Algorithms can check assignments faster than any human and more reliably. They can also be used as plagiarism checkers by educational institutions.
AI can also be used to learn about a student’s progress and their needs so it can spot where students have weaknesses and suggest appropriate exercises to catch up. Teachers can use these insights to better cater to each student’s academic and personal growth.
The use of collaborative tools such as interactive panels and tablets continues to rise, alongside apps. Technologies that foster teamwork, collaboration and social skills will ensure schoolchildren have the skills they need to be successful employees in the future workplace.
Technology can enhance access to education. Instead of heavy textbooks that need to be lugged around, digital replacements can be accessed at any time. Within the classroom, accommodations can be made for more personalised learning that is tailored to a student’s needs. They can learn at their preferred pace; technology makes this more feasible than ever before. There are also tech solutions for students with physical disabilities and/or learning difficulties.
However, digital tools remain out of reach for some students; making hardware and online learning accessible to everyone will be an issue that needs to be addressed in the future.
With the cost of virtual reality headsets decreasing over time, many more schools and colleges are expected to use these as part of the curriculums. VR gives students a more immersive experience, such as studying how chemicals interact, the processes of the human body, or realistic representations of dinosaurs to study. Such immersive technologies enable virtual transportation into situations previously deemed impractical or even unsafe.
