‘The Nut Behind The Wheel’ this weeks Cyber Insights from The National Cyber Skills Centre

Mechanical failure, a tyre blowout, maybe some black ice or inclement weather - what causes cars to crash? They are many variables and each sad situation will be unique, but so often the real cause is human failure. In the book “Silent Victories”, by John W. Ward and Christian Warren the discuss the history of public health in America and they dedicate an entire chapter to the responsibilities for traffic safety. This chapter is titled ‘The Nut Behind The Wheel’.

So often, even through we like to try and not believe it, human interaction with technology in all it’s guises is a weak link. When I managed a team of support engineers looking after a vast fleet of desktops and laptops we would be bombarded with issues on how bad the technology was, how it wouldn’t do its job, how it was a waste of time and life was so much better in the days of typewriters and secretaries.

The answer to cyber issues might be to remove the human element and add more automation.
